On 22 februari 2024 the Italian Air Force bid farewell to the Agusta-Bell AB212 also called the HH-212A in the Italian Air Force. On that day the HH-212A performed it's last flight with more than 180.000 flight hours and 40 years of service in the Search And Rescue (SAR) and Combat Search And Rescue (CSAR) and Special Operations Forces (SOF) roles, national and international missions.

The HH-212A performed one last demo, performing simulated missions and performed a fly-pass with his successor the HH-101 Caesar. After those demo's the last 2 HH-212A's came in to land for the very last time and received an water salute from the base fire department.

Chief of Staff Luca Goretti declared that the helicopters, before stopping completely, will be sent to Piacenza where, together with the G.91 that flew at the centenary, they will be preserved and kept in excellent condition so that they can still fly for the next future events where they could be seen once again performing together with other historic vehicles of the Italian Air Force

General Goretti, during his speech, wanted to underline the importance of this particular event: "Today we proudly salute a machine that made the history of the Air Force, but above all the personnel who made this helicopter exceptional".

Referring then to all the crews and personnel who operated on this helicopter, he highlighted: "When there is a flood, an emergency, when someone needs to be rescued, even in bad weather, you are always there unconditionally, even putting your life at risk, because you are going to save someone else's life."

"And we do this" he continued "as the Armed Forces because we are convinced that, when we need to save one of our colleagues or fellow citizens, we intimately feel it as our duty and not because we are obliged by law." The Head of Sma then concluded by saying: "The machines change, the people change, but the spirit remains: that winning spirit that distinguishes the Air Force and was demonstrated during the Centenary. Passion, strength, teamwork. Be proud of it

Over the course of these four decades, the helicopter has been the protagonist, together with the Air Force crews, in numerous operational missions beyond national borders (Afghanistan) and in the national field, participating in search and rescue missions in particular events that have affected the civilian population, such as the floods in Piedmont, that of Sarno and that in Friuli or even following the earthquake that hit the island of Ischia.

Version after version, the helicopter then produced under the Bell license in Italy by Agusta (now Leonardo) was used during the day, at night and in all weather conditions, with night vision goggles and with numerous configurations also suitable for combat thanks to protections for the crew and defensive armament and infrared guided anti-missile countermeasures: in this configuration the HH-212A was also deployed with the ISAF contingent in Afghanistan.

As reported in the Air Force note, this model ended its operational life on the 22nd of februari 2024 after having flown for over 180.000 hours and having contributed to the rescue of hundreds of people. The ceremony was presided over by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, general of the air force Luca Goretti, and saw the participation of the commander of the air force, general of the air force Alberto Biavati, the commander of the 1st Special Operations Air Brigade, general of brigade Riccardo Rinaldi, the commander of the 9th Wing, Colonel Salvatore Florio, and local civil, military and religious authorities, in addition to the Wing staff and the flight crews and specialist personnel who have operated on this aircraft over the years.

The Italian Air Force purchased the first three AB212's in 1979 for the Decimomannu range (Cagliari), where they were operated by the 670th Squadron of the RSSTA (Reparto Standardizzazione e Sperimentazione Tiro Aereo – Italian for Aerial Shooting Standardization and Testing Unit).

In 1984, 32 AB212's were ordered, to be operated by the new rescue sections of the 603rd (Villafranca Airport), 604th (Grosseto Air Base), 609th (Grazzanise Air Base), 632nd (Brindisi Airport), 651st (Istrana Airbase), 653rd (Linate Airport), 660th (Amendola Air Base) Squadriglie (Liaison Flights).
