On 9 March 2024, Malmstrom AFB (MT) celebrated the arrival of its first MH-139A Grey Wolf. Having arrived from Boeing’s Philadelphia (PA) facility three days earlier on 6 March, the first state-of-the-art Boeing (Leonardo) Grey Wolf helicopter, with serial number 20-1006, has now Malmstrom near Great Falls as its homebase.

Overseen by the 582nd Helicopter Group, the 40th Helicopter Squadron and the 550th Helicopter Squadron, both residing at Malmstrom will be using the MH-139A.

Replacing the Bell UH-1N Huey helicopters that are now based at Malmstrom since 1970, the 40th Helicopter Squadron's MH-139A will be used as a security response for the 341st Missile Wing which is also located at Malmstrom.

The squadron supports emergency war order taskings, by transporting tactical response force teams in support of launch facility denial and recapture and convoy operations.

The 550th Helicopter Squadron, which was activated in May 2023, is responsible for Air Force Global Strike Command’s training and conversion to the MH-139A.
